PROSTATE DISEASES: SCREENING, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT

The term prostate is well known in the community but unfortunately what exactly it stands for is not. The prostate is not a disease; it is an organ whose function is to produce most of the fluid part of the semen. As with all organs, the prostate has different kinds of diseases: infections (prostatitis), age-related prostate enlargement (benign prostate hyperplasia-BPH) and cancer. Differentiation of particular disease is crucial as the treatment modalities vary. As American Aesthetics Medical Center Andrology department we are well equipped to handle all diagnostic workup necessary for differential diagnosis and serving you the best treatment options.

Prostate Treatment

Infections of the prostate are very troublesome and decrease the quality of life deeply. It can be chronic or acute. In the acute phase, high fever; fatigue, inability to pass urine or painful urination, perineal pain, blood in the urine are the major symptoms. If not adequately treated it may also be mortal. This picture would absolutely take you to a doctor, but chronic prostatitis is more subtle. There are mainly three symptoms: perineal discomfort, urinary symptoms, and sexual dysfunction. The fever is usually mild to none. Chronic prostatitis may be infectious but in most of the cases, bacteria may not be identified.

Benign prostate hyperplasia

Men start having changes in their prostates starting from the age 45 but mainly after 50. Since the prostate gland surrounds the urethra ( the urinary channel ), once it starts to enlarge it may squeeze the urethra causing the classical urinary symptoms. (for self-evaluation of your urinary symptoms please check the prostate symptom scoring calculator https://qxmd.com/calculate/calculator_338/international-prostate-symptom-score-ipss). Different treatment modalities are present in modern urology and you don’t need to live with bothersome symptoms.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. It does not carry specific symptoms. When cancer-related symptoms arise it might be very advanced. In modern medicine, it is crucial to detect prostate cancer in the earliest stage possible so that a 100% cure rate be achieved. Prostate cancer is a familial disease. That means if you have a close relative ( father, grandfather or brother) who has prostate cancer your chance to developing prostate cancer is 3-4 times higher than the normal population. Please check our check-up packages for yearly controls.

Prostate Evaluation
  • Medical history/consultation/ examination: This will be carried out by Prof.Dr. Haluk Kulaksizoglu
  • Symptom Scoring: Self-reporting questionnaires are used to quantify your symptoms
  • Urine analysis
  • PSA( prostate specific antigen) screening test: Both total and free PSA levels are measured in blood test and their ratio is calculated
  • Uroflowmetry: A computerized system to measure your urine flow rate. A very objective and useful tool to show the level of obstruction.
  • Post-micturition residual volume measurement: The amount of urine left in the bladder after micturition is measured
  • Urinary system ultrasound: Prostate, bladder and kidneys are evaluated. Any additional disease presence can be detected.
  • Urodynamics: If urination problems are complex involving not only prostate obstruction but also neurological diseases or bladder function problems’ the treatment should be aimed at precise differential diagnosis. This is a computerized test that evaluates obstruction as well as bladder functions.
  • Cystoscopy: This is a way to visually assess the urinary channel, bladder neck and bladder mucosa. It is done under local anesthesia with soft flexible devices that details the anatomy.
